What is Spa Hose? Best tubing for a DIY Cold Plunge | Flexible PVC Tutorial
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.2 месяца назад
"Spa Hose" is a term in the DIY Cold Plunge Community that is often mis-used. This video will (hopefully) clear up the differences between Vinyl Tubing and Flexible (PVC) Spa Hose. One of the mistakes I see is folks trying to bond vinyl tubing to PVC using primer and cement - this is a no-no. The beauty of true Spa Hose is that you CAN use PVC primer & cement with PVC fittings, it also connects...

Here's a quick tutorial update for converting your Active Aqua, EcoPlus or similar style chiller from the stock barbed fittings to PVC for a diy cold plunge. Why would you want to do this? Well, the standard barbs on these chiller fittings are typically a touch smaller that the vinyl tubing ID size... which means there is potential for leaks. Plus, I'm not a huge fan of using vinyl tubing anywa...

    ALSO: Always connect same side to the front/back of each device. Meaning that you can rearrange the components in case you accidentally put something in the wrong direction of flow like a venturi, check valve or filter housing. It's an easy mistake to make and is easily fixed if you've put unions on each side of each component. I like to put the female side of the union facing towards the line on each component and the male side facing the component side. 🤔

    I broke down and got an ozone machine. I tried CH and surprise, my indoor setup is bad for that lol 😅 I'm not putting it on the filter, I'm putting it on the outlet side. I'm refinishing the panels and trim work, I will get you the blog post review for my indoor setup eventually lol. Been using for 3 weeks, it's been great. My reasoning for putting it past my chiller (outlet side) is purely convenience and I don't want a mess of plumbing in one place. The framing plan left a LOT of airspace in the mech area which I appreciate and make good use of with various components all spaced out effectively. Just needed to know the duration you run yours. 1hr~ cool and thanks for The content. Hopefully I can give back eventually with the blog post.

      I prefer it a couple inches below the water line when no one is in the tub. Moves more water/breaks up the thermal barrier that way. Short answer is it's all preference. The tub is so small it will have plenty of recirculation

      The pump is slightly more powerful than the flow rate of both, the flow rate of the filter is significantly more than the Venturi. Water follows the path of least resistance.

    $150 for a used chest freezer. Turn it on over night and it'll start to freeze so we unplug it for 4 days and it goes from about 35 to 48 and then we plug it it again for one night. Add a 1/4 teaspoon of chlorine ever couple uses. No sealing, no leaking, super easy.

    Just got my Active Aqua 1/4. I wasn't sure this would work cause the 3/4 pvc is slightly larger (hence the drilling needed) then the OEM piece. Since I had most of the stuff, I took off the OEM gasket, put it on the 3/4 pvc with taper out and it is now too large to go into the chiller. It sits on the rim. On the OEM the taper part of the gasket goes in maybe 1/4 " but once you stretch it onto the pvc it now too large. My Chiller holes look same as yours meaning the holes are straight not tapered,... Tried a 1/2 pvc piece and it slides thru the gasket and isn't snug, so might work if was able to get it to compress enough when screwed in. So what do you think the issue is? They changed the gasket thickness? Cause 3/4 pvc isn't going to work, there is no way it will seal if even the first part of taper won't go into hole.

    • @daveb2077
      @daveb2077 24 дня назад

      All may not be lost. The OEM smallest part (the tapered) is 31.59mm and the Chiller opening is 33.48mm. When the Tapered gasket is fitted on the 3/4 pvc the same part of the gasket is 34.64mm, so it will barely fit even if compressed. But, without enlarging the hole in the OEM nut, you can use 1/2 pvc. It is loose, but with the gasket on and tightened down the nut/gasket holds the 1/2 pvc tight. The nut is almost all the way down and 3.74mm of the gasket still sticks out. It feels like it should be tight enough to prevent leaking. So that might work. Going to try that. Would need two elbows for 1/2 to 3/4 pvc. Update: Works

    • @DIYColdPlunge
      @DIYColdPlunge 20 дней назад

      Can you send me an email through my website showing this? I'm having a hard time following... The gasket piece shouldn't go all the way into the attachment hole on the chiller, it needs that compression to create the seal.

    • @daveb2077
      @daveb2077 20 дней назад

      @@DIYColdPlunge I might clean it tomorrow and will get you some pics. The gasket doesn't fit in all the way. It sticks out about 4mm after fitting the nut on. You tighten the nut till the 1/2 pvc is snug and won't pull out. The nut still can go down a bit after that if you really cranked it. But as with most plumbing works, you get leaks sometimes from over tightening. Have it running for 4 days now and except for the condensation no water. It was a choice of this or the barbed fittings (with ring clamps and possibly silicon) or putting the gasket on the 3/4 pvc (which made the gasket bigger than the hole). I saw the best choice was to try the 1/2 pvc with the gasket most of the way in and still compressed to a leak proof fitting, than the gasket barely in or just sitting on top of hole with the 3/4 pvc. The elbow is right above the nut so can't just unscrew the nut to show you how much is still sticking out without pulling the hole thing out. So to recap: Yes the gasket is compressed and not all the way in (after tightening). Thanks for all your excellent videos. (Did anyone ever mention the Duck you send has ears? lol)

    Hi Joe. I seem to have an issue when it comes to sanitation of the water in the cold plunge. I am using a 350l pvc barrel and a very similar plumbing system as you do. After 10 days of use I am starting to notice that the water filter is getting pretty dirty and I can feel that the bottom and the edges of the barrel have a very smooth feel to it (assuming it is algae). The water has no smell though and it looks clear. I do however notice bubbles that look like foam floating at the top, could this be from too much ozone or is it something else? I’ve been running the chiller and water pump 6hrs/day and ozone 1hr/day. Looking forward to your reply mate, cheers.

    • @DIYColdPlunge
      @DIYColdPlunge 20 дней назад

      Usually bubbles/foam like that mean you are bringing oils, detergents/etc. into the tank with you on your skin & clothes when you plunge. Deodorants, sweat, etc. are usually the culprit. You can try a soaking sponge or giving yourself & your clothes an extra rinse before getting in.

    • @benjaminmisleta6574
      @benjaminmisleta6574 19 дней назад

      @@DIYColdPlungeappreciate your reply. You were right, but unfortunately I was about algae also, so I had to empty out the tank and give everything from pipes, filter and the barrel a good rinse and clean. I have concerns regarding the ozone generator, as if it’s ineffective or at least not enough, should I be adding chlorine? What could have caused this, have you had any similar problems throughout the years? Thank you once again
